julesjones: I believe in safe, sane, and consensual Christianity. by Zeborah@DW - gankable (Christianity)

Our little community has been inactive for some years, but I had planned to post for Easter this year. I was in the middle of composing my post when politics intruded in the form of new terms of service on LiveJournal. The moderators felt that the new ToS, in particular the requirement to adhere to Russian law and its censorship of much political commentary, was not compatible with the mission of this community. This applies most obviously to our pro-LGBT stance, but there are other ramifications.

The posts and comments from the LiveJournal version of the comm have been imported to the Dreamwidth version, and the LiveJournal comm has now been deleted. If you wish to manage your imported posts or comments but don't have a Dreamwidth account, there are instructions for using the OpenID system with your LiveJournal account: http://www.dreamwidth.org/support/faqbrowse?faqid=123

This community was originally set up on both LiveJournal and Dreamwidth, but posts and comments on the two are not identical because it wasn't possible to mirror communities exactly. In light of recent changes to the LiveJournal TOS, the moderators feel that it would be prudent to import the Livejournal version to the Dreamwidth version.

We understand that some of you may feel uncomfortable with your posts or comments being visible on one or another site, but might not have access on that site to amend them. If so, the moderators can delete your posts and comments or set your  posts to private for you. If you posted or commented with your site ID on one site, you should have an OpenID which will allow you to modify your comments on the other site, but this doesn't always work, and some people did not comment with a site ID.

This community was founded for Pentecost 2010. Today is Palm Sunday in both the Western and Eastern Church. It seems a fitting day to close comments on LiveJournal and reconvene elsewhere. Both sites have an RSS feed to the other site; for those on LiveJournal, please follow our feed from Dreamwidth at http://bearingwitness.livejournal.com/

39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
-- Matthew 22:39-40 King James Version (KJV)

It's already late in the day in some timezones, and we haven't quite left Whit Sunday in others. Never mind. We're still open for business, and the conversation goes on.

We chose Pentecost for our festival of posting, for its symbolic value, but we're not confining posting to a single day. Posts and comments are welcome. It doesn't have to be personal witness -- links to useful resources are also welcome, and reviews of good books on our subject matter would make useful posts. Please try to remember to tag your posts with subject matter so anyone coming along later can pull up topics of interest.

I've just done a repost for someone who helped us noodle the concept for Bearing Witness, but who doesn't currently have easy LJ/DW access. I probably can't do that for folk in general, but I do want to provide somewhere where it's on-topic for people to post links to their own posts on other blog hosts. If such is your situation, this thread is open for comments.

If your problem is that you'd like a DreamWidth account but can't afford a paid one, we can probably find an invite code for you.

Yay, Pentecost party! Remember, this comm isn't just for the three founders to preach at you. It's open to anyone to comment, and to anyone to become a member and put up a top-level post, so long as you keep to the ethos of the comm given in the profile.

On that subject, see part 3 of Zeborah's post just before this one about the ideal of tolerance we should aspire to. I've been fiddling all morning with my post about evolution, because it derives from conversations where I have become exasperated by both fundamentalist creationists and fundamentalist atheists, and become less than charitable towards both. I *think* it's more or less sanitised^Wedited now, so that should be coming up soon.

This community is currently open for anyone to join, and all members may post entries. Anyone may comment (including anonymously).

We aim to challenge people, not to attack them. We might criticise ideas and behaviours, but we won't condemn people. We ask community members and commenters to abide by the same principles.

As moderators we will do our best to keep this a welcoming and pleasant space. To do this we will freeze any thread that becomes heated, and may delete posts or comments containing ad hominem attacks. If we have to delete a post or comment from the same user more than 3 times, we may bar them from posting or commenting again.

If at any stage we find we're not able to keep up with moderating with the current settings, we might tighten up the settings to let us do so. If this is necessary, we'll post to explain what we've changed and why.
